Healthy Living

Before and In Progress

Sheryl - 1998

Here are some shots of me (Sheryl) on my way to "Healthy Living". The first shot was taken on July 4, 1998 at a cookout at our house. I'm not really sure what I weighed, but I think it was around 185 or 190. Seeing this picture is what prompted me to start the "Healthy Living Forum" in August, 1998.

Before In Progress

In August, 1998 I got fed up with being so heavy and unhealthy and started the Healthy Living forum so people would have someplace to vent, get support and share our triumphs. The forum and all the members have really helped me on my way to a new healthier me. I have not been on a "diet" - I have been eating normal, healthy meals and getting plenty of exercise. The second picture is 2 months after I opened the forum, October 17, 1998 at 169 pounds. I put the same outfit on as in the first picture and tried to strike the same pose. I no longer look 7 months pregnant in this outfit :-) and the t-shirt actually hangs LOOSELY on me!!! Losing weight is a fringe benefit of a healthy lifestyle! I'll post another picture when I hit 150 pounds and again when I reach my goal weight of 130 pounds. Thanks to all the members of the Healthy Living forum for all of your support!!

Updates

July, 2002

I haven't made any progress with my weight. I think I've gotten my diabetes pretty well under control. My last HbA1c test was 7% which is considered "under control" by the American Diabetes Association, but my doctor wants my reading to be 6.5%.

Part of my problem is insulin resistance. Insulin moves the glucose into cells so it can be used for energy. When the cells resist the insulin, you end up with no energy and the glucose is deposited as fat, usually around your abdomen. The buildup of excess fat in that area adds to insulin resistance, so it's a cycle that is very difficult to break.

I am planning a spa trip with Suze and Anne the first part of September.

January, 2002

I'm nearly back to where I was in the "In Progress" photo above, but as is typical, I don't feel an ounce lighter. I know I must look better because people have commented on my weight loss. I don't have a picture yet. I'm going to wait until I hit 150 pounds or wear a size 14 (and not a "Gap Stretch Jeans" size 14 - I can wear those now!) - whichever comes first.

July 2001

If wishes were horses. . .

I got back up to my beginning weight when I stopped smoking, and was also diagnosed with diabetes. Quitting smoking was the single most healthy thing I could have done. I have since learned that watching what I eat alone isn't going to do it. I have added exercise to my routine (walking most days and strength training and stretching 3 days a week). I am back down to about 180 as of July, 2001. More progress photos will come, I promise!
