Getting to know your new doctor

Doctor

You and your new doctor have a common goal -- your wellness. So, after you choose your doctor, you'll want to start your new partnership off on the right foot.

If possible, try to have your prior medical records forwarded to your new doctor's office before your initial visit. Remember to take your insurance cards with you.

At your first visit, your doctor learns about your family, medical and social history. This background lays the foundation for a successful doctor-patient relationship, giving your doctor the information needed to treat you.

Communication is an important part of any good relationship -- including the one with your doctor. It's important to share information about both prescription and over-the-counter medications, special health concerns and any lifestyle factors that may affect you.

Include information about any herbal or vitamin supplements you may be taking. Also use this opportunity to find out about your doctor's approach to medicine and area of expertise.

Your doctor is a valuable ally in keeping you in good health. For more information on working together effectively, see Taking a more active role in your health care.
